Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued the following
statement to mark International Women's Day, March 8, 1997:
"In recognition of International Women's Day, I would
like to honour Canadian women.
International Women's Day grew out of women's heroic battles
for better working conditions when industrialization drew large
numbers of women into the paid labour force.
As we now move into the information age, it is heartening to
see that young women and young men are finally being able to reach
their full potential together. However, equality has not yet
been achieved for women. For this reason, this government has
strengthened employment equity legislation, improved women's access
to training, and improved legislation governing child support.
We have approached our legislation with an awareness of its impact
on women.
International Women's Day is an opportunity for Canadians to
reflect on the essential contributions that women bring to Canadian
society. I would like to challenge both men and women to do their
part in removing barriers to the full and equal participation
of women in all aspects of the life of our country."
