Senior Appointment Announced

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that John McLure, Deputy Minister of Western Economic Diversification, has indicated his intention to retire.

The Prime Minister also announced the appointment of Oryssia Lennie, currently Deputy Minister of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs, Government of Alberta, as Associate Deputy Minister of Western Economic Diversification, effective April 14, 1997.

Mrs. Lennie's appointment at this time will ensure a smooth transition within the Department of Western Economic Diversification upon Mr. McLure's retirement.

On behalf of all Canadians, the Prime Minister took the opportunity to thank Mr. McLure for his outstanding service during a career of 37 years in the public sector.
