Lucie Pépin Appointed to Senate

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that His Excellency
the Governor General has agreed to summon Lucie Pépin of
Quebec to the Senate of Canada.

Lucie Pépin
Lucie Pépin is well known in Quebec for her long involvement
in public life and community activities. She was born in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu on September 7, 1936.
During the 1960s, Lucie Pépin was a nurse in Montreal.
She served as Head Nurse at the first out-patient birth control
clinic in Canada. From 1972 to 1979, she was National Coordinator
of the Canadian Committee for Fertility Research. She served as
Vice-President of the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status
of Women from 1979 to 1981, and as President from 1981 to 1984.
She also served on the Committee on Sexual Offences Against Children
and Youth from 1980 to 1983. From 1984 to 1988, she was the Member
of Parliament for the Montreal riding of Outremont. She subsequently
served on the Royal Commission on Electoral Reform and Party Financing.
She was appointed to the Appeal Division of the National Parole
Board in April 1993, and resigned on April 8, 1997. She has two
children.
