Prime Minister Announces Appointments to the National Round Table

April 23, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of three new members and the reappointment of seven members to the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy.

The Round Table was established in 1988 as a multi-sectoral body which plays the role of catalyst in identifying, explaining and promoting, in all sectors of Canadian society and all regions of Canada, the principles and practices of sustainable development. In 1994, the Round Table was proclaimed as an independent federal agency, mandated by an Act of Parliament. It brings together distinguished Canadians from all sectors of society -- government, industry, labour, academia, environmental organizations and aboriginal groups -- dedicated to the promotion of sustainable development in Canada. As such, the Round Table is in a key position to influence and add a value to ongoing efforts to meet the goal of sustainable development.
