Prime Minister Announces Secretary Of State Appointment

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Mr. Gilbert Normand will be appointed as Secretary of State (Agriculture and Agri-Food)(Fisheries and Oceans). Mr. Normand was confirmed as Member of Parliament for Bellechasse-Etchemins-Montmagny-L'Islet following the completion of a judicial recount yesterday.

The Prime Minister said "I am pleased that Gilbert Normand is joining the Ministry as Secretary of State for Agriculture and Agri-Food and Fisheries and Oceans. With his training and community experience, he will make a valuable contribution to our team and to the management of agricultural and fisheries issues."

Mr. Normand will support the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans in these new responsibilities.

A private ceremony presided by the Governor General for the swearing-in of Mr. Normand will be held at 9:00 a.m. at Rideau Hall tomorrow, Wednesday, March 18, 1997. There will be a photo opportunity following the ceremony. Attached is a biography of the new Secretary of State.

THE HONOURABLE GILBERT NORMAND

Secretary of State (Agriculture and Agri-Food)(Fisheries and Oceans)

Constituency:Bellechasse-Etchemins-Montgmagny-L'Islet

A physician, Gilbert Normand studied medicine at Laval University and has a career that spans two decades. After 20 years as a family doctor, he worked in community health. His acomplishments include the establishment of a youth clinic, serving as regional chair of the Red Cross and as head of the community health department.

His extensive community involvement includes such roles as founding president of the Cote-du-Sud Tourism Office, president of the Cote-du-Sud Economic Council and president of the Council of Economic Development in the region of Chaudiere-Appalaches. Born in 1943 in Montmagny, Dr. Normand lives in Saint-Aubert with his wife and three children.
