Prime Minister Announces the Appointment of a New Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Donald Campbell as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Campbell will also take on the responsibility of "Sherpa" to prepare for annual summit meetings. Since January 1993, Mr. Campbell has been serving as Canada's Ambassador to Japan. His appointment is effective August 4, 1997.

Mr. Campbell replaces Gordon Smith, who is retiring from the public service on June 27, 1997, after a distinguished career of 30 years, both in Canada and abroad.

The Prime Minister also announced that Gordon Smith will continue to serve the Canadian public on a part-time basis following his retirement from the public service. Mr. Smith has been appointed Chairman of the International Development Research Centre, effective June 30, 1997.
