Prime Minister announces the appointment of his special representative on the Pacific Salmon issue

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Dr. David W. Strangway as his Special Representative on the Pacific salmon issue. The Prime Minister is also pleased to note the appointment, by the President of the United States, of Mr William Ruckelshaus as Dr. Strangway's counterpart.

Dr. Strangway will report to the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Fisheries and Ocean. Mr. Ruckelshaus will report to President Clinton and the Secretary of State.

The special representatives have been tasked to find the most effective way to reinvigorate the stakeholder process to resolve the differences over interpretation and implementation of the objectives of the Pacific Salmon Treaty. They are to begin work immediately.
