Statement by the Prime Minister

July 30, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his outrage and sorrow at the two bombings in Jerusalem which have claimed the lives of over 10 people and injured more than 150 others.

"These senseless acts of terrorism inflict untold pain and suffering on innocent people. To the victims and their families, I offer my heartfelt condolences and prayers" said Mr. Chrétien. The Prime Minister added, "Such barbaric acts must not be allowed to destroy the hopes of the people in the region for a just and lasting peace. I urge all the parties to resume direct negotiations."
