Statement by the Prime Minister

August 20, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep regret on hearing of the death of political scientist Léon Dion.

"Through his actions and the body of work he has bequeathed to us, Léon Dion made an exceptional contribution to public debate over a period of many years. Integrity and intellectual rigour were only some of the fundamental values he communicated to his students during his truly brilliant academic career.

At this difficult time, I especially mindful of the sorrow of his son, Stéphane.

Aline and I offer our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Dion, my colleague Stéphane and the entire Dion family, as well as to Léon Dion's many friends."
