Statement by the Prime Minister

September 5, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed his deep sadness today at the news that Mother Teresa had passed away:

"Mother Teresa was a truly exceptional human being, whose deep spirituality and compassion for the world's suffering multitudes was an inspiring example. Her dedication and courage earned her praise from the mighty and the famous. But it was service to the weak and nameless that gave her life meaning and for which she will always be remembered. She was admired by Canadians from all walks of life. Her loss will not only be felt in Calcutta, but around the world."
