September 24, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that he has asked Deputy Prime Minister Herb Gray to assume responsibility for co-ordination and planning of the Government of Canada's participation in national and international activities to mark the new Millennium. In the Speech From the Throne, the Government indicated its intention to help build a partnership among governments, communities and citizens to mark the new Millennium.

In announcing Mr. Gray's lead role in this project, the Prime Minister noted that the Deputy Prime Minister will work closely with his Cabinet colleagues and consult other levels of government, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and other countries to establish a framework for Canada's Millennium activities. All parliamentarians will also be asked to play a role in the consultation and planning process.
