Prime Minister Launches National Space Day

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today officially launched Canada's first National Space Day at the John Chapman Centre, headquarters of the Canadian Space Agency, in St. Hubert, Quebec.
In launching National Space Day, the Prime Minister stressed the long-term importance of raising the awareness of young Canadians about the fascinating things that Canada is doing in space. "The Canadian Space Program has made Canada a global leader in space technology development. And through its many industrial partnerships, the Canadian Space Agency is a catalyst for growth and job creation in this critical knowledge sector of the economy," he said.
"National Space Day events being held in schools across the country - and the Canadian Space Agency's ongoing education programs - are a good investment in future growth by encouraging our young people to pursue careers in science and technology."
The Prime Minister also praised Canada's astronauts, five of whom were in attendance at the ceremony. "They epitomize the dedication and pioneering spirit that has made Canada the great nation it is today. There could be no better role models for our children."
Canada s first National Space Day is part of this year s Science and Technology Week involving over 2,000 activities and exhibitions in communities across Canada.
