Prime Minister Announces New Director of Appointments

November 10, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that, effective January 1, 1998, Mr. Percy Downe will be joining his personal staff as Director of Appointments. The Director of Appointments is responsible for assessing and recommending candidates to the Prime Minister for Order-In-Council Appointments.

In making the announcement, the Prime Minister expressed his deep appreciation to Ms. Penny Collenette, who has served as his Director of Appointments since November, 4, 1993. "Penny has done a simply outstanding job," he said. "She has brought a new level of integrity and credibility to a process that is very challenging. Thanks to the skill and dedication she has displayed on my behalf, we have been able to attract highly-qualified people to government service."

Mr. Downe is currently Executive Assistant to the Minister of Labour. Prior to joining the Minister, he served as Executive Assistant to two premiers of Prince Edward Island, the Honourable Joseph A. Ghiz and the Honourable Catherine Callbeck. "I am very pleased that Percy has agreed to come on board," said the Prime Minister. "I can think of no one better able to keep up the high standards we have brought to our appointments process."
