Prime Minister Announces New Director of Caucus Research

November 10, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Mr. Jonathan Murphy is assuming the position of Director of the National Liberal Caucus Research Bureau. The Bureau serves as a primary source of research and communication materials for the Liberal Caucus.

"I am pleased that Jonathan will be leading our Research Bureau team," said the Prime Minister. "His background and experience ensure that our Caucus will continue to enjoy a high level of service and advice."

In making the announcement, the Prime Minister also thanked out-going Director of Caucus Research, Mr. Daniel McCarthy, for his fine stewardship of the Bureau during the government's first mandate.

Since 1995, Mr. Murphy has held the position of Executive Director of the Population Research Laboratory at the University of Alberta, Western Canada's largest survey research unit. He served as Executive Director of Edmonton Social Planning Council, Alberta's major non-profit social research and evaluation organization, from 1990 to 1995. For nine years prior to 1990, he worked in Edmonton's inner city as a researcher, client service coordinator and program manager providing services to youth, families-at-risk, the homeless, and the mentally ill. Trained as a teacher, Mr. Murphy obtained his Masters of Arts (Political Science) in 1985 from the University of Alberta. In 1980, he completed a Bachelor of Economic Science from the University of Wales.

He assumes his duties at the Bureau on December 8, 1997.
