President of China to Make State Visit to Canada

November 21, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that President Jiang Zemin of China will make a state visit to Canada from November 26 to 29, following the APEC Leaders' Meeting in Vancouver. The President's visit, at the invitation of the Governor General, will include events in Calgary, Ottawa and Toronto.

"President Jiang Zemin's visit to Canada is an excellent opportunity to advance the special relationship that exists between Canada and China and the important commercial ties we share," said the Prime Minister. "Since our first Team Canada trade mission to China in 1994, it has been gratifying to witness the growing presence of Canadian firms within the China market. I look forward to strengthening the friendship between our countries and working together to further our common interests as Pacific partners."

In Calgary on November 26, President Jiang will receive an official welcome from the Governor General, and attend meetings and a dinner hosted by Premier Ralph Klein. The following day, the President will take part in a site visit to Northern Telecom (Nortel).

Following a meeting hosted by Ontario Premier Mike Harris on November 29, President Jiang will depart for China.
