Statement by The Prime Minister

November 24, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Chrétien today expressed his sadness at the news that the Honourable John Sopinka, Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, had passed away.

"With the passing of Justice John Sopinka, Canada has lost one of its finest jurists. A quick, innovative mind earned him a place at the very forefront of the Canadian legal community, a position confirmed in 1988 with his elevation to the Supreme Court. Through his fine example and his learned opinions, Justice Sopinka will continue to be a profound influence on lawyers today and for many years to come.

On behalf of all Canadians, I extend deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones."
