Statement by the Prime Minister

January 10, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today made the following statement regarding his absence from the start of the Team Canada Trade Mission due to the ice storm crisis in Canada:

"I am disappointed that I will not be able to leave with the Team Canada mission tomorrow because of the unprecedented ice storm crisis in Canada.

But the vitally important Team Canada mission will go ahead, with its hundreds of entrepreneurs, ready to do business with new partners in Latin America, with the majority of Canada's provincial premiers, and under the distinguished leadership of our country's head of state, the Right Honourable Roméo LeBlanc, Governor General of Canada.

I am confident that this Team Canada mission will be one of our most successful, building on Canada's strong links and frienship with Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile.

I look forward to joining the trade mission as quickly as events permit."
