Statement by the Prime Minister

February 4, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the independence of Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued the following statement:

"On behalf of the Government and people of Canada, I am pleased to extend our congratulations and warm wishes to the people of Sri Lanka on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their independence.

Since independence, Canada and Sri Lanka have cooperated at all levels to develop a strong relationship, based upon family ties, mutual goals and common traditions. We share membership in important international organizations such as the Commonwealth and the United Nations, and have enjoyed a lengthy tradition of collaboration to establish stability and prosperity in South Asia. As we look towards the 21st century, I am confident that our two nations will continue on this path of friendship and cooperation."
