Statement by the Prime Minister

February 25, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his sadness at the news that W.O. Mitchell has passed away.

"A uniquely gifted Canadian voice has fallen silent. The themes of W.O. Mitchell's work were universal but he brought to them a distinctly Canadian perspective that resonated well beyond his native Saskatchewan and throughout the country.

While we are saddened that this giant of our culture is no longer with us, we take comfort from the knowledge that through his diverse body of work his wit, and wisdom will continue to entertain and inspire Canadians for all time."

The Prime Minister and Madame Chrétien extend sincerest condolences to W.O. Mitchell's family and his many friends.
