Statement by the Prime Minister

June 22, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

The following is the text of a message from Prime Minister Jean Chrétien on the occasion of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day:

"Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day gives all French-speaking Canadians an opportunity to reaffirm proudly the culture we share and the lasting ties of solidarity and friendship that unite us throughout the country.

Reflecting our diversity, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day has also become a special day for all Quebecers, highlighting their invaluable contribution to and ongoing participation in our collective development.

As both a proud Quebecer and French-Canadian, I am delighted to offer best wishes to all my fellow citizens on the occasion of this great celebration of friendship.

Aline and I wish you a happy Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day."
