Statement by the Prime Minister

July 20, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his sadness on the death of the Honourable Florence Bird.

Florence Bird was an individual whose commitment to women's rights and a better Canada was both strong and spirited. Mrs. Bird contributed, with great dedication and determination, to the public life of Canada as the chair of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women and as a Senator. Many Canadians will remember her best as a journalist and broadcaster, a field to which she brought the same qualities. It says much about her steadfast devotion to our country that Mrs. Bird is a recipient of both the Order of Canada and the Governor General's Persons Case Award.

On behalf of all Canadians, I extend my sympathies to her family and loved ones.
