Statement by the Prime Minister

July 20, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Chrétien expressed his dismay and sadness today at reports of the great loss of life from earthquake-induced tidal waves that hit Papua New Guinea on Friday.

"Canadians are shocked to hear of the horrible devastation caused by the tsunami. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families in their time of sorrow.

On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I would like to express my condolences to the people of Papua New Guinea. Our prayers are with them."
