 Summit of the Americas 2001

Fête nationale des Acadiens et des Acadiennes

August 14, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

The following is the text of a statement by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien on the occasion of the Fête nationale des Acadiens et des Acadiennes :

"The Fête nationale des Acadiens et des Acadiennes on August 15 showcases the resolve of a people who have proudly affirmed their identity over the centuries.

In New Brunswick, as elsewhere in our land, the energy of Acadians enriches our communities by contributing to their cultural, social and economic growth. Flourishing in this sense of community, Acadian men and women remind us of the values uniting all Canadians from one end of our great country to the other.

The Francophone Summit to be held in Moncton next year will highlight the vitality of Acadian culture.

Aline and I wish all Acadians a very successful celebration."
