President of Botswana to Visit Canada

October 6, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that the President of Botswana, Festus Mogae, will visit Canada October 8 and 9.

"Through our work together in the Commonwealth and in the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, strong and friendly relations have grown between Canada and Botswana," said the Prime Minister. "The President's visit will provide further opportunity to expand our ties."

This visit marks the first bilateral visit undertaken by Mr. Mogae since he became President of Botswana in April 1998. President Mogae's two-day visit includes events in Ottawa and Toronto.

In addition to meeting with Prime Minister Chrétien while in Ottawa on October 8, President Mogae will call on Governor General Roméo LeBlanc, International Cooperation Minister Diane Marleau and Secretary of State (International Financial Institutions) Jim Peterson. In Toronto on October 9, the President will address the business community and meet with Canadian academics.
