Statement by the Prime Minister

October 16, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today congratulated David Trimble and John Hume on their winning the Nobel Peace Prize for their years of work in the cause of peace in Northern Ireland:

"Peace loving people everywhere applaud this decision by the Nobel Committee. John Hume and David Trimble were sustained in their cause, often at great personal risk, because they knew in their hearts that the people of Ireland wanted an end - once and for all - to years of violence and bloodshed.

This recognition is an inspiration not only to their countrymen, but to war-weary people everywhere who long for peaceful solutions to seemingly intractable conflicts."
