Statement by the Prime Minister

October 17, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his sadness at the news that The Right Honourable Brian Dickson, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, had passed away:

"Brian Dickson will be remembered as one of the most outstanding Chief Justices ever to grace the High Court. A jurist of keen intellect, discerning judgement and great integrity, he assumed his office of Chief Justice at a time when Canadians were just beginning to understand and make use of the protections afforded by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In this historic new setting, he carried out his always demanding and complex responsibilities with trademark suppleness and wisdom.

Mr. Dickson was also a highly-decorated Veteran of World War Two, whose deep respect for the military gave him great credibility as in the review of the military justice system that he carried out for our government.

He will be sorely missed by all who had the honour and privilege of knowing and working with him. Aline joins me in offering heartfelt condolences to Brian Dickson's family and friends."
