Statement by the Prime Minister

October 23, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chretien welcomed news of the breakthrough in the Middle East peace process announced earlier today in Washington:

"As a strong and active supporter of the Middle East peace process, Canada is very much encouraged by the news that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat have reached an agreement on the further redeployment of Israeli troops in the West Bank and heightened security cooperation.

All parties to the talks displayed extraordinary persistence and ingenuity in overcoming the misgivings and obstacles that stood in the way of an agreement. But it is clear that this historic milestone could not have been reached without the skilful mediation of President Clinton and the good offices of King Hussein.

All Canadians join me in the hope that the full implementation of this agreement will create a momentum which will lead to a lasting peace."
