Statement by the Prime Minister

December 9, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement tonight following the news of the sudden death of Shaughnessy Cohen, MP for Windsor - St. Clair:

"Like my colleagues on all sides of the House, I was stunned and deeply saddened to learn about Shaughnessy. Anybody who ever had the pleasure of knowing and working with her would attest to her incredible energy and vitality. Her tenacity and dynamism, her down-to earth style and her wonderful sense of humour made our Caucus - and indeed the entire House of Commons - a better place. That she could be taken from us so suddenly is beyond belief.

She has been a valued member of our team since 1993 and a hard-working representative for the people of Windsor - St.Clair. Her work as Chair of the Parliamentary Justice Committee helped Parliament - and our government - deal with some of the most contentious issues of our day in a common sense, humane way, bridging differences and seeking workable solutions. I know I speak for our whole Caucus when I say she will be sorely missed .

Aline joins me in offering deepest sympathy to her husband, Jerry, and to their family. Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with them tonight."
