Statement by the Prime Minister

December 10, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed the sadness of all Canadians at the news that a jet belonging to the Canadian Forces Snowbird aerial demonstration team crashed in south-central Saskatchewan, killing its pilot.

"It was a terrible shock this morning to hear of the crash of the Canadian Forces jet and of the death of Captain Michael VandenBos during a Snowbirds training flight. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and with his colleagues at the 431 Squadron, Canadian Forces Base Moose Jaw.

The Snowbird aerial team is one of the most identifiable of Canadian symbols. Their professionalism, precision and courage make us extremely proud and for this reason this accident touches us all deeply.

Aline and I offer our deepest condolences at this sad moment."
