Statement by the Prime Minister

January 2, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued this statement concerning the New Year's eve avalanche in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Québec:

"Words cannot adequately express the deep sadness all Canadians felt at the news that a joyous celebration of the New Year had suddenly been transformed into a time of grief, suffering and loss.

Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with the families of the victims. May they find some measure of peace and comfort in one another and in friends. And we hope that the injured enjoy full and speedy recoveries.

We also pay tribute to the way the whole community - in that great Northern tradition - has pulled together in the face of this terrible tragedy. They braved extreme weather conditions to rush to the aid of their neighbours. Their prompt action no doubt saved many lives. And we know that they will continue to be a comfort to those who are grieving in the difficult days ahead."
