Statement by the Prime Minister

January 9, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued this statement on the news that Saul Rae had passed away:

"Saul Rae was one of the most able and distinguished diplomats ever to represent Canada abroad. His keen intellect, fine judgement and - above all - his kindness defined him as a person and as a professional, and served our country well in postings that took him from Paris to the United Nations. I consider him to be one of the most impressive people I have ever had the pleasure and privilege of knowing. He will be sorely missed.

Among Saul's many fine qualities, I was always struck the most by his profound love for and understanding of Canada, as well as his zest for public service. Perhaps his most important legacy is the way he inspired these same qualities in his children.

Aline joins me in extending our most heartfelt condolences to his wife, Lois, his children, Jennifer, John and Bob, his brother, Jackie, and his grandchildren."
