January 11, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the Honourable Judge Donald H. Christie, the Associate Chief Judge of the Tax Court of Canada, as Chief Judge of the Tax Court of Canada. He replaces Chief Judge Jean-Claude Couture who retired from the Bench.

Chief Judge Christie graduated in Law from University of British Columbia in 1951 and was called to the Bar of British Columbia that same year.

Prior to his appointment to the Tax Court of Canada as Associate Chief Judge in 1983, Chief Judge Christie had been Chairperson of the Tax Review Board. He was Associate Deputy Minister for the Federal Department of Justice from 1973 to 1983, Assistant Attorney General of Canada from 1967 to 1973 and, prior to that, had been Director of the Criminal Law Section of the Department of Justice of Canada. From 1956 to 1960, he was Head of the Legal Division of the Department of Citizenship and Immigration. Chief Judge Christie had also practised law in Vancouver.
