Statement by the Prime Minister

January 13, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued this statement on learning that the Honourable Walter Harris had passed away:

"As Minister of Finance under Louis St. Laurent, Walter Harris helped preside over the post-World War Two economic expansion during which Canada took its place among the ranks of the leading industrial nations in the world. And as the father of the Registered Retirement Savings Plan, he left a legacy of personal retirement security that has become steadily more important to Canadians over the years.

Walter's integrity, honour and commitment to his fellow citizens embodied the very finest traditions of public service. He was a distinguished parliamentarian and a friend, whom I will greatly miss. Aline joins me in extending our sincerest condolences to his family and many friends."
