Statement by the Prime Minister

January 26, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed sadness on behalf of the Canadian people following yesterday's devastating earthquake in Colombia:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of all those who have lost their lives or have been injured in this most overwhelming disaster. Our concern goes out to everyone whose life has been shattered, and who now faces a long and arduous road ahead to rebuild their homes, their lives and their communities.

Canada stands ready and willing to help Colombians in the recovery and reconstruction effort. Our officials are already in urgent discussions on the best ways to channel emergency humanitarian assistance and we will stand by Colombia in the longer term as it rebuilds."
