Statement by the Prime Minister

February 7, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed his deep sadness on the news of the death of King Hussein of Jordan.

"King Hussein was a champion of peace in the Middle East. He was one of the true statesmen of the post-war period, an abiding voice for civility and moderation who made an indispensable contribution to fostering reconciliation. He was beloved and held in the highest esteem by the Jordanian people.

On behalf of the Government and people of Canada, I salute King Hussein and his personal legacy of courageous support for peace and stability in the Middle East. I look forward to the continued commitment of Jordan to the peace process.

At this time of great loss, I extend deepest sympathies to Crown Prince Abdullah and to the government and people of Jordan. And I pledge the continued friendship of Canada to the Crown Prince as he assumes the throne."
