Statement by the Prime Minister

March 6, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep sadness on the news of the death of the Sheikh Isa bin Salman al-Khalifa, Emir of Bahrain:

"For nearly forty years, Sheikh Isa guided Bahrain through a period of tremendous progress, and was largely responsible for building his nation's reputation for economic freedom and social tolerance.

Sheikh Isa successfully provided for the safety and security of his country, and Canada was proud to be Bahrain's ally during the 1991 Gulf War to protect the region from aggression.

On behalf of the people of Canada, I extend deepest sympathies to His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa as he assumes his important new responsibilities, to the royal family and to the people of Bahrain. I pledge Canada's continuing friendship in the years to come."
