Statement by the Prime Minister

March 16, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep sadness on learning of the death of Gratien Gélinas:

"During a career that spanned more than sixty years, Gratien Gélinas has had a profound influence on the history of Canadian theatre. The sum of his work expresses a deep attachment to our society and a deep desire to present all aspects of our daily lives.

He will also be remembered for his generous contribution to the development of the arts in Canada, especially through the creation of La Comédie Canadienne and his participation in the founding of the National Theatre School of Canada. Our country's artistic life is richer because of Gratien Gélinas, and the memory of this pioneer of the performing arts will inspire our artists for many years to come in their quest for originality and excellence.

Aline joins me in offering our sincerest sympathy to the family of Gratien Gélinas as well as to his many colleagues and friends."
