Prime Minister announces official visit to Canada of Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization Yasser Arafat

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that the Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Yasser Arafat, will pay an official visit to Canada on March 24. This will be Chairman Arafat's first official visit to Canada.
"Canada is a strong supporter of the Middle East Peace Process and Palestinian development," said the Prime Minister. "The Chairman's visit will provide a further opportunity to expand our ties and promote peace in the region."
In addition to meeting with Prime Minister Chrétien, Chairman Arafat will meet with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lloyd Axworthy, Minister for International Trade, Sergio Marchi, and Minister for International Cooperation, Diane Marleau.
