Joint Statement by Prime Minister Chrétien and Premier Zhu Rongji on China's Accession to the World Trade Organization

April 16, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

We are pleased with the significant progress our countries have made in our bilateral negotiations on China's entry into the World Trade Organization. As a result of the productive discussions on both goods and services this week, we have moved substantially closer to resolving all remaining bilateral issues. We have instructed our respective officials to intensify negotiations so as to reach final agreement within a short period of time.Canada is confident that China will be a member of the WTO by the end of this year, and both countries look forward to working together in the WTO on issues of common concern.
