May 11, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the state visit to Canada, on May 13 and 14, of Their Majesties King Abdullah Bin Al-Hussein and Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, at the invitation of Governor General Roméo LeBlanc.

During their stay in Ottawa, the royal couple will meet with the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Herb Gray, the Speaker of the Senate, Gildas L. Molgat, and the Speaker of the House of Commons, Gilbert Parent.

The Governor General and Mrs. Diana Fowler LeBlanc will host official welcoming ceremonies and a State Dinner in honour of the royal couple, who will be guests at Rideau Hall during their visit.

In their discussions, the Prime Minister will reassure the King of Canada's continued support for Jordan during this time of transition. They will also discuss the Middle East peace process, including the situation of Palestinian refugees, Jordan's relations with its neighbours and internal reforms aimed at democratization and the promotion of human rights, and bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

The Prime Minister will also express his appreciation for Jordan's ratification of the landmines treaty.
