Jamaican Prime Minister to Visit Canada

May 28, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that Jamaican Prime Minister Percival James Patterson will visit Canada from May 31 to June 5, 1999.

"Jamaica is one of Canada's longstanding allies in the hemisphere. And Mr. Patterson's visit speaks to the closeness of our friendship," said the Prime Minister.

Canadian official development assistance to Jamaica, $6.7 million in 1997-98, supports good governance through projects which support local government reform, gender equity, and legal reform. Multi-year environmental programs include the Trees for Tomorrow Project and the Environmental Action Plan. Canada is also working to strengthen Jamaica's economic competitiveness in ways that emphasize equitable distribution of the benefits.

In Ottawa, Prime Minister Patterson will be received by Governor General Roméo LeBlanc, the Prime Minister and the President of the Canadian International Development Agency. Mr. Patterson and the Prime Minister will discuss bilateral issues as well as international cooperation and hemispheric relations.

Prime Minister Patterson will participate in the 5th Montreal Conference as a guest speaker. There, he will meet with Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lyle Vanclief and with members of the business community. Mr. Patterson will also visit Toronto, where he will meet with business people and members of Toronto's Jamaican community.

Mr. Patterson's last visit to Canada was in July 1994.
