Prime Minister Salutes Federal Public Servants

June 11, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien made the following statement on the occasion of National Public Service Week, June 13-19, 1999:

Each year, National Public Service Week allows for the recognition of the contributions of the members of the Public Service of Canada. It is an occasion to reflect on the dedication of these men and women who work across Canada and abroad. It is also a time for all Canadians to learn more about the programs, services and career options offered by their government.

The Public Service of Canada is an important component of our democratic system of government. The work of public servants touches the lives of all Canadians, and it often touches the lives of people in other countries as well – we only have to think of their exemplary efforts in organizing a warm welcome and a safe haven for Kosovar refugees in Canada.

In my travels, I am frequently reminded of how lucky we are to have one of the finest public services in the world. In all their diversity, the members of the Public Service of Canada reflect the values, experiences and aspirations of our country. It is with much pride that I call upon all Canadians to pay tribute this week to the members of the Public Service of Canada – Proudly Serving Canadians.
