Prime Minister Announces Wedding Gift for His Royal Highness Prince Edward and Miss Sophie Rhys-Jones

June 18, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister is pleased to announce today the Government's gift in honour of the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince Edward and Miss Sophie Rhys-Jones on June 19, 1999.

This gift, The Prince and Princess Edward Prize in Aboriginal Literature, consists of a special grant to the Canada Council for the Arts of $15,000 to establish a one-time prize to be administered by the Council. The peer selection committee for an existing Council program, Aboriginal Literature: Written and Spoken Word, will identify as prize laureates the best two established authors and best two emerging authors who have applied to the program in 1999. The two established authors will receive $5,000 each in addition to their regular grant, and the two emerging authors will receive $2,500 each in addition to their regular grant. This prize reflects the interest of The Prince Edward in establishing a gift which would remain in Canada for the benefit of all Canadians.

The Prime Minister also extended warm best wishes on behalf of the Government and the people of Canada to Prince Edward and Miss Rhys-Jones for health and happiness as they start their life together.
