Prime Minister Announces State Visit to Canada of Korean President Kim Dae-Jung

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that the President of the Republic of Korea, Kim Dae-jung, will pay an state visit to Canada July 4-6, 1999, at the invitation of Governor General Roméo LeBlanc.

"I am very pleased to welcome President Kim on his first state visit to Canada," said the Prime Minister. "His personal struggle for human rights and democracy in his country has been an inspiration not only in Asia, but throughout the world. Canada firmly supports President Kim in his program of economic reform and his efforts to normalize relations with North Korea. We look forward to broadening and deepening our bilateral relations during this visit."

President Kim will meet with Prime Minister Chrétien and senior members of Cabinet. The President will be accompanied by Korea's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Hong Soon-young and Minister for Trade, Han Duck-soo.
