Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today conveyed the deepest condolences of the Canadian people on the deaths of twenty-three school children in the Republic of Korea:

"We are deeply saddened to learn that an accidental fire at a youth camp has resulted in the deaths of twenty-three kindergarten and primary school children. We share the sorrow of the families and friends of these children, as well as that of the Korean people.

Our heartfelt condolences are with all those who have been affected by this tragic event."
