Prime Minister Welcomes Northern Ireland Agreement on Implementation of the Good Friday Accord

July 2, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today welcomed the agreement on implementation of the Good Friday Accord reached by the unionist and nationalist parties in Northern Ireland, and expressed the hope that this latest agreement is another solid step in the direction of lasting peace.

"On behalf of the Government and people of Canada, I want to congratulate the two sides on the agreement that they have reached." said the Prime Minister. "We all recognize that tough compromises had to be made by the negotiating parties. Their success responds to the overwhelming desire for peace by the people of Northern Ireland, which so impressed me during my recent visit."

Prime Minister Chrétien also congratulated British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern for their unflagging dedication to the vision of a peaceful and prosperous Northern Ireland.
