Statement by the Prime Minister

July 12, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien was saddened today to learn of the death of Robert- René de Cotret:

"Robert-René de Cotret spent the better part of his career promoting the economic interests of Canada and of his fellow citizens. Our country's prosperity and success were very close to his heart, as evidenced by the years he spent as President of the Treasury Board and as head of the Department of Industry, Science and Technology–which, incidentally, he helped create–and of the Department of the Environment. I am deeply saddened by his untimely passing.

On behalf of all Canadians, Aline and I extend our sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Robert-René de Cotret."
