Statement by the Prime Minister

July 18, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien was deeply saddened today to learn of the death of former Senator Alan MacNaughton:

«Throughout his tenure in the House of Commons and in the Senate, Alan MacNaughton always strived to serve the people of Canada with honor and distinction. In so doing, he earned both the respect and the recognition of his colleagues on all sides of the House.

I was a newly elected Member of Parliament when Alan MacNaughton was selected as Speaker of the House. He had a great sense of fairness and a deep love of democracy, qualities that later motivated him to introduce sweeping reforms in parliamentary procedure. His passing is a great loss for our country.

On behalf of all Canadians, Aline and I extend our sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Alan MacNaughton. »
