Statement by the Prime Minister

July 24, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed his deep sadness today after learning of the death of Senator Paul Lucier:

"I was very sad to learn that Paul Lucier has lost his long and courageous battle with illness.

Since his appointment to the Senate in 1975, he had been a strong and effective voice for the people of the Yukon. Paul Lucier always had the courage of his convictions, and he demonstrated time and again his deep commitment to both his country and his fellow citizens. Over the last few years, even while undergoing treatment for his illness, he nonetheless gathered sufficient strength to travel regularly to Ottawa and continue to serve Canadians to the best of his considerable abilities. He was a respected Parliamentarian who will be greatly missed.

Aline joins me in offering our deepest condolences to his family, as well as to his many friends and colleagues."
