Statement by the Prime Minister

August 2, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement today on the news of the terrible train collision at the Gainsan Train Station in India that has taken more than 500 lives:

"The hearts of all Canadians go out to the families and loved ones of the victims of this horrible accident. Our thoughts are also with the members of the Canadian Indian community.

Such a sudden and inexplicable loss defies our understanding. We hope that those who are grieving will find some solace in the knowledge that our prayers are with them.

Aline joins me in wishing each and every one of them some peace and comfort in the difficult days ahead."
